For Minerva

Description

There was a strange atmosphere that followed the war. It was thick, gloomy, harsh, full of sorrow. It felt a lot like a stuffy head after a good crying or the settling of embers after a raging fire. There was some relief to the end of the turmoil, but the aftermath kept the optimism from showing itself.
For Milon, standing around was something he did often recently. On top of the trauma he’d endured in the healing camp, all the wounds, cries, smells, noises…. deaths. It was certainly one thing to think about war, but to experience it was completely on a level Milon couldn’t have ever imagined. As he stood around in the camp, he heard voices talking to each other. Many of them were irritable or sad.
“Don’t just gloom around! Help fix something. The bounty hunters won’t rest until we’re wiped clean away.” The first voice was the irritable one.
    “But I just…. C-can’t believe…” the second voice sniffled.
“Well, it’s how things are now. You’re not the only one that’s suffered a loss, so stop acting like you are!”
Milon didn’t bother to look at who the cats were. He probably wouldn’t be able to put a name to them regardless. He just continued to stare at the ground, scan over the grass, reach the bush line of the camp, travel up the tree trunks, look at the point in which the sky kisses the tree tops, and then look down again with the occasional scuffle of his paws so imitate productivity. He couldn’t help it; Milon hadn’t ever felt like this, not even after his parents and Seerah had left. The hollowness that lingered throughout his body made it feel as if the wind could blow him off into the sky at any moment while at the same moment he felt glued to the spot in which he stood. No one seemed to dare challenge him about the matter, so he’d remained there for a long time that morning. Many of the traumatic events kept replaying in his head, but the worst memory he recalled from the previous days was when he’d found out about the attack on Fire Empire’s camp while everyone else was away. Minerva is gone! he heard A bunch of cubs were stolen! Acacia and Zues are….
Every time this memory came into play, he wasn’t able to shake the heart wrenching feeling until he’d gotten too far into it. Everything was a mess right now. Two newly made parents were murdered. Acacia and Zues didn’t know Milon, and he’d only known them by their popularity in Fire Empire, but the fact that his empire mates were hurt and killed…
Andromeda, one of his mother like figures, was as distant as ever after this war. Her only son, Polaris, was taken. Milon remembered when her cubs were born, he was so happy, so nervous. These cubs were like his own younger siblings and though he never said a word to them yet, he loved and cared for each of them deeply. he wanted to be there to protect them, but now he’d failed before he’d even gotten the chance. He failed Polaris. He failed Brutus. He failed Aries and Antares. Most of all, he’d failed Andromeda. He dared not go near Andromeda. There was no way he could face her, so he avoided her to the best of his ability which wasn’t hard since she was busy being leader. He only hoped she didn’t notice.
Minerva was gone as well. He didn’t know if she was alive or not. They’d taken her, or her body.
Milon’s head dropped a little more. Minerva was a spit fire. She was always rude to him, and him to her. It was the nature of their friendship. Believe it or not, it was one of the most, if not the most, comforting relationship he had in Fire Empire. Kat was his loving, protective sister, but Minerva was that rival he always needed. She was the friend that kept him on his toes in the most rude of ways, but it was most relieving for him to have someone to tease and joke with. She made him stronger than any fighting ever could have.
He had other friends, sure, but they had their own bearings to deal with.  Suferue was dealing with an issue with Ajax. He wasn’t quite sure what it was, but Suferue would slip out alone and disappear at times. There were a few times Milon wanted to pursue her to help since she was another motherly figure in his life, but fear and respect kept him away.
Losing Minerva, Polaris, and the suffering of Suferue reminded him of his old friend Uma.  When he’d lost her, he only felt anger. He was only a cub then, so anger came naturally to him. He just couldn’t believe the same thing was happening again… Back then, Uma was his only friend and he lost her just like he lost Minerva.
Milon continued his eye routine and paw scuffling until he froze and his eyes widened as he stared at the ground. Wasn’t there someone who Minerva was close to? A faint figure came to mind. He raised his head a little. “No…” he said softly. He whipped around quickly and stared at the cub’s den.
There was someone else who was in the same boat as him in regards to Minerva.
He began walking to the cub’s den.
There was someone who might need someone else to lean on.
He stopped right outside the den. It was hard for him to take the next step into the den. After all, Aries and Antares were bound to be there. Much to his luck, no one was there except the one who he’d been hoping to see.
“Hazel,” he said softly, in a downcast tone.
The little gal was curled up alone and sniffling, no doubt reliving the horrors she’d encountered. She didn’t take any notice of him right away, though Milon wasn’t aware as to why. She must have noticed the entrance light dim while he occupied the doorway since she slowly turned to look over her shoulder. She said nothing. Of course. They were virtually strangers. Milon only knew her name by hearing it from others.
The little gal looked confused as to who he was.
“Hazel… I know... “ He hung his head as his voice choked. He wasn’t able to not get choked up. He’d tried so hard not to, his whole body was tense, but one or two tears made their way out of his eyes. He looked back at her quickly. “I know we both lost Minerva but that doesn’t mean that we both need to be alone.”
Hazel continued to look confused and a little startled for a moment before she seemed to understand what he said. Her delay in reaction was something Milon didn’t understand but he continued to speak. “It doesn’t have to be like this.” He had tears welled up in his eyes now.
Hazel sat up with the same look on her face.
“My family is small and distant but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of it…” This was enough emotion for Milon. He had to sit and then fall to his belly and rest his head down on his paws. “I’m sorry I can’t be strong right now, but we can find a way to get Minerva back if she’s still out there.” His ears dropped.
There was a minute of silence as Hazel pieced what he’d said together. She crawled over to the downed Milon and crouched before him, sharing the sad look they both had.
This time Hazel spoke. “Minnie is a fighter… She’s still out there.”
    Milon slowly nodded. “You’re right.”
“We can learn to… To be strong together, for her. Right?”
He nodded more decisively this time.
In unison, they softly said “For Minerva.”
